Smith is an award-winning entrepreneur, engineer, and tech evangelist — collaborating on tech-forward networked innovation for social, environmental and economic-inclusive solutions, today at shift7, on boards, and earlier as an exec in Silicon Valley and in government leadership.
Smith served as the third U.S. chief technology officer from 2014-2017 -- working on issues from AI, data science and open source, to inclusive economic growth, entrepreneurship, structural inequalities, government tech innovation capacity, STEM/STEAM engagement, workforce development, and criminal justice reform. Work included broad capacity building by co-creating all-hands-on-deck initiatives, including the public-private programs TechHire, the Computer Science for All, AI town halls, Opportunity Project, and Image of STEM.
Prior, Smith spent over eleven years at Google as vice president leading new business development including acquisitions of Google Earth, Maps, Picasa; championed DEI, led the Google.org transition to increase engineering adding Google Crisis Response, GoogleforNonProfits, Earth Outreach/Engine; and later co-created WomenTechmakers, SolveforX. PlanetOut CEO in the early days of the Internet, early smartphones General Magic, Apple Japan.
