Humans vs Robots: Who will defend citizen rights in the future?
Advances in AI are poised to empower citizens like never before. Modern western society relies on specialised professional humans - lawyers - to defend citizens rights. Complexity of the legal system and structural injustices make it nearly impossible for citizens of modern democracies to exercise their rights on their own - whether that is in defending against criminal charges or understanding how to build new AI innovations in a world of emerging and inconsistent regulations. Technological breakthroughs now give rise to the question: Can we chuck the lawyers and build a future resting on self-representation? An expert panel discusses if the legal system is about to have its crypto moment - when decentralisation and empowerment of individuals has the chance to shift entire organs of government and the economy.

Biodiversity & The Oceans
In conversion with Terry Tamminen
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Terry Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency, and later Cabinet Secretary, the Chief Policy Advisor to the Governor, where Terry was the architect of many groundbreaking sustainability policies. These include California’s landmark Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, the Hydrogen Highway Network, and the Million Solar Roofs initiative. His ample experience has led him to specialised insights across business, farming, education, the environment, the non-profit space, the arts, and government.
In 2010, Terry co-founded the R20 Regions of Climate Action public-private partnership, bringing together sub-national governments, businesses, financial markets, NGOs and academia to implement measurable, large-scale, low-carbon economic development projects. Together, they aimed to simultaneously solve the climate crisis, and build a sustainable global economy.
Belonging to the 7th Generation Advisors group, Terry also provides insights for Pegasus Capital Advisors, the Green Climate Fund and other global companies, as well as governments and philanthropists — including Fiji, India, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation — on climate solutions, sustainability, and green investing.

Planetary sapience: The geophilosophy of Earth’s evolving cognitive exoskeleton
Over the past few centuries, humans have accidentally and chaotically transformed Earth’s ecosystems. Our awareness of the scope of these disruptions has been enabled by the deployment of an emergent megastructure of satellites, sensors, networks, and supercomputers, that together are rendering planetary systems increasingly visible, comprehensible, and foreseeable.
This recently-evolved, smart exoskeleton — in essence a distributed sensory organ, and cognitive layer for the planet — is fostering an unprecedented form of planetary sapience, sagacity concerning planetary-scale phenomena. This emergent intelligence is now rapidly maturing into a technostructure, that makes it possible, and necessary, to pursue a planetary-scale terraforming.
